Juan d’Marcos Gonzales & Jonathan, UW-Madison, USA December, 2015 The group Sierra Maestra, headed up by Juan d’Marcos Gonzales, is a nine-piece son band originally from Havana and one of the finest and most popular musical ensembles performing in the Spanish Caribbean today largely because of their commitment to the old-style son of the 1920s and ’30s. Gonzales is also affiliated with the famed Buena Vista Social Club. I caught up with Gonzales, at UW-Madison during his residency linked to Cuban music. He is indeed a living legend.
